The Women in Golf (WIG) program is a highly impactful, dedicated initiative within the Western States Golf Association (WSGA) structured to recruit, educate, and empower minority women through the game of golf.
Operating extensively at the regional area levels, the program aims to systematically dismantle historic ethnic and gender exclusion on the golf course by providing affordable, structured gateways for adult female beginners.
Core Mission & Outreach
- Expanding Membership: The explicit vision of the WIG initiative is to attract women who have never played before, continuously increasing female enrollment and representation within the broader WSGA network and its regional sub-clubs.
- Resource Elimination: A major barrier to entry for women entering golf is equipment acquisition. The WIG program directly solves this by providing all necessary golf clubs and gear required for participants to learn and complete the training.
The 8-Week Training Program
- Dual Tiers: Clinics are organized into separate Beginning and Intermediate tracks running from April through September.
- Comprehensive Instruction: Participants undergo continuous training detailing swing mechanics, short-game execution, course management, golf etiquette, and scoring rules.
- Community Inclusivity: Though focused heavily on empowering women, the training curriculum is designed to build a supportive community atmosphere and invites both women and men to join in the instructional sessions.
The hallmark of the initiative is its multi-month clinic system, typically deployed through regional hubs like the WSGA Southern Area (SA) program (often hosted in partnership with affiliate clubs such as the Tee Divas & Dudes Golf Club):
